The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering that prepares students for careers as biomedical engineers in industry, in various healthcare settings such as hospitals and medical research facilities, or to pursue graduate studies in biomedical engineering. Biomedical engineering is also an excellent preparation for medical school. The department also participates in the Seven-Year Medical Program with the New Jersey Medical School. The BS degree requires a minimum of 36 course units with the course distributions as shown below:
Course Distribution | Course Units |
Mathematics | 4 |
Natural Science (Physics/Chemistry) | 4 |
Life Sciences | 2/3 |
Computer Science | 1 |
Biomedical Engineering | 18/19 |
Social Science/Humanities | 6 |
Total | 36 |
Biomedical Engineering Research Track
The Biomedical Engineering Department Research Track is designed for exceptional students to pursue a faculty mentored research experience for 2-4 consecutive semesters at 0.5 or 1.0 cu per semester. Participation for one summer is required, contingent on a successful MUSE faculty-student application. The student will receive 2 cu that are applicable to two of the 4 BME electives. More information can be found on the Research Track website.
Medical School Preparation
As indicated above, the biomedical engineering program is an excellent choice for students interested in medical school. The BS program in Biomedical Engineering at TCNJ enables students to meet the admission requirements for most medical schools. The second semester of organic chemistry with lab is not listed explicitly, however, students may take a science/math technical elective course in the spring semester of the junior year. Although admission standards vary, most medical schools require:
- One year of college level calculus
- One year of general chemistry with lab
- One year of general physics with lab
- One year of general biology with lab
- One year of organic chemistry with lab
- At least 24 semester hours (6 course units) of humanities and social sciences
For more information, please see the TCNJ Medical Careers Advisory Committee website.
