Departmental Honors Program

The Biomedical Engineering department offers students in the BME program the opportunity to earn Departmental Honors. The program offers students an opportunity to be recognized for work above and beyond that necessary for their degree. Student must be meet eligibility requirements, listed below, and complete one of the recognized options for advanced work prior to graduating. Departmental honors are not connected to Latin Honors that are based upon the overall college GPA, or TCNJ’s Honors Program.

Eligibility

All BME students having the following are eligible to apply for departmental honors

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.3 or greater (aligned to department research track requirements)
  • Completed 7 CU BME courses at TCNJ

Options for Departmental Honors

The following are options for earning departmental honors. Only one is required:

a. Peer-reviewed publication (to be done with BME department faculty)

b. Research Track defense (to be done with BME department faculty)

c. Complete the industry-focused Pathway for Patient Health Certification – This quality science education program adds critical knowledge for careers in pharmaceutical, medical device, biotech, animal health and consumer goods industries.

Application Process

Prior to the student’s final semester, they will communicate to the Departmental Honors Committee chairperson their intention to apply for departmental honors and the nature of advanced comprehensive work to be submitted for honors consideration. This communication should be done by email using the Department Honors Application Form.

Communication of Advanced Work

  • For research-based honors (option b above), the student and their Principal Investigator will schedule an open technical presentation for the student to present their work to faculty and other students. The formal presentation is expected to last at least 30 minutes and allow for 15 minutes of open question and answers. If needed, this open session will be followed by a closed session for faculty to offer questions to ascertain the student’s fundamental understanding of the work presented. This technical presentation must be completed at least 3 weeks before last day of classes in the final semester prior to graduation.
  • For industry-based honors (option c above), official supporting documentation from P4PH must be submitted to the Departmental Honors Committee at least 3 weeks
    before last day of classes in the final semester prior to graduation.

Committee Review

During the final week of the semester, the Departmental Honors Committee will meet to review and adjudicate Honors standing for each applicant. Applicants will be notified of final status within seven days of decision.
