Technical Seminar– Device development: Avoiding the pitfalls

The first event in the Department of Biomedical Engineering’s Technical Seminar Series will be with Scott Brown, Executive Director of Device Development at Merck & Co. He will be giving a talk on product development problems and ways to avoid them.

Most Product Development problems fall primarily into 3 buckets:
1. Those that you can solve with money
2. Those that you can solve with technology
3. Those that can’t be solved with money or technology.

Buckets 1 and 2 will often have some amount of overlap but bucket 3 stands alone and is obviously someplace development engineers never want to land. This presentation covers the steps involved in medical device development with a focus on drug delivery devices. It covers how to avoid the serious technical problems that have been known to cause failure as well as things related to projects and people that also need to be managed. These principles can be applied to all product development programs.
